Why Sleep Aboard Instead of Commuting from Labuan Bajo

The sites that define Komodo National Park — Padar’s ridgeline, the manta cleaning stations at Manta Point, the sandbar at Taka Makassar — sit 30 to 50 kilometres from Labuan Bajo harbour. A day boat spends four to six hours of every trip just covering that distance, and it arrives at each site at the same time as every other day boat. A liveaboard removes the commute entirely: Riley Phinisi anchors inside the park overnight, so the distance to tomorrow’s first stop is measured in minutes, not hours.

In practice, sleeping aboard buys you three things day-trippers never get:

• Padar at sunrise. The day fleet reaches Padar mid-morning. From an overnight anchorage nearby, you start the hike in the dark and stand on the ridge as the light comes up — often with the viewpoint to yourselves.
• First water at Manta Point. Early morning means calmer surface conditions, better visibility and an empty mooring before the crowds arrive from town.
• No 5 a.m. hotel pickups. Your bed travels with you. Wake up, eat breakfast on deck, and the tender is already in the water.

Cabins: Where You Sleep on Riley

Riley Phinisi was built in 2020 by the traditional shipwrights of Bulukumba, South Sulawesi, in ironwood and teak — 29 metres long with a 5-metre beam. Below deck and on the main deck she carries four private cabins, each with its own bathroom and air-conditioning, sleeping up to 10 guests in total.

A 5-ton fresh-water tank supplies hot showers throughout a multi-night stay, and the full crew — including a private chef — lives aboard with you, so meals, housekeeping and water activities run on your schedule rather than a tour operator’s.

Nights at Anchor: What Evenings On Board Look Like

Riley cruises at 6–9 knots between sites, then drops anchor in a sheltered bay for the night. The main engine — a Mitsubishi 6D16 — shuts down at anchor; twin generators (22 kVA and 30 kVA) keep the cabins air-conditioned and the deck lit.

Most groups shape their evenings around the same rhythm: an anchorage near Kalong Island to watch thousands of flying foxes stream out of the mangroves at dusk, dinner cooked by the chef and served at the outdoor dining table, then the deck jacuzzi under a sky with no light pollution for a hundred kilometres in most directions. The karaoke and sound system are there if your group wants noise; the anchorage supplies silence if you do not.

Snorkeling Manta Point and Taka Makassar from the Tender

The tender is what turns Riley from transport into a water-sports base. Rather than swimming from the hull, the crew runs you to each site and manages the drift:

• Manta Point (Karang Makassar). The tender drops you up-current of the cleaning stations and you drift over them while the driver shadows the group for pickup. Mantas visit the stations year-round; sightings peak in the rainy months from roughly December to February.
• Taka Makassar. A crescent sandbar on shallow coral — calm, waist-deep entry, the easiest snorkel in the park and the natural warm-up session for children or first-timers.
• Pink Beach. Coral gardens start metres from the crushed-red-coral sand, close enough to snorkel straight off the beach between swims.

On a multi-night stay, two to three water sessions a day is normal. Snorkeling gear is carried on board, and because the boat is private, the crew re-orders sessions around tide and current rather than a fixed timetable.

Diving from Riley

Riley is set up first as a snorkeling boat; scuba diving is arranged as an add-on through Komodo Luxury, which organises licensed local dive guides and rental equipment when you request it at booking. Komodo’s reputation among divers rests on current-swept sites, so certification level matters: calmer reefs around Taka Makassar and Pink Beach suit newly certified divers, while the famous drift sites are best left to Advanced Open Water divers with drift experience. How Many Nights Should You Book?

Two nights aboard covers the park’s northern classics without rushing. Three nights is the most common booking: it adds time for repeat manta sessions and a slower pace between anchorages. Four nights or more lets the captain push to quieter corners of the park that day boats never reach — worth it for groups whose priority is time in the water rather than a checklist. One planning note: Komodo Airport (LBJ) is 20 minutes from the marina, so a morning arrival in Labuan Bajo connects directly to a midday boarding — no hotel night required before embarkation unless you want one.

Is it safe to snorkel off Riley in Komodo’s currents?

Yes, with the crew managing it. Currents in Komodo are real, which is why every session runs from the tender: the crew reads the tide tables, drops the group at slack or drift-friendly windows, keeps a guide in the water and the tender alongside, and skips exposed sites entirely when conditions or swimmer ability call for it. Life vests are available for every guest.

Will engine noise keep me awake at anchor?

The main engine shuts down once Riley anchors for the night. A generator keeps running to power the cabin air-conditioning — a low background hum from aft of the boat, not the working noise of the drivetrain. Most guests report the opposite problem: the anchorages are quiet enough that the 5:30 a.m. Padar wake-up call feels early.

Do I need a dive certification to enjoy the water on this trip?

No. Snorkeling is the core water activity, and Manta Point, Taka Makassar and Pink Beach all reward snorkelers at the surface. Certified divers should bring their certification cards and request dive arrangements at booking; Advanced Open Water is recommended for Komodo’s current-swept dive sites.
