Komodo Has Two Seasons — Here Is What Each Means on Board

Komodo National Park runs on a simple rhythm: a long dry season from April to November and a short wet season from December to March. Riley Phinisi sails year-round from Labuan Bajo, so the real question is not whether you can charter, but what kind of trip each window gives you.

In the dry months the sea between Labuan Bajo and the park is typically flat in the mornings, underwater visibility often passes 20 metres, and the trail up Padar is dry enough for a pre-dawn summit hike in trainers. This is the season the classic photographs come from: brown savannah hills, three-coloured bays, and a sky that stays clear until late afternoon.

From December to March, short tropical downpours roll through, usually in the afternoon, and the hills across Komodo and Rinca turn green. January and February bring the roughest crossings of the year; Riley’s captain will resequence the route around the weather, favouring the sheltered anchorages between Rinca and the inner islands. The trade-off is plankton-rich water — and that is exactly what the mantas come for.

December to February: Manta Season at Manta Point

If reef mantas are the reason you are coming, aim for December to February. The rainy-season plankton bloom draws the largest aggregations of the year to Manta Point, where the animals hold in the current to feed and pass through cleaning stations a few metres below snorkellers. Mantas are seen in Komodo in every month, but this is when your odds of a multi-animal encounter are highest.

A private boat earns its keep in this season. Day boats from Labuan Bajo reach Manta Point mid-morning; Riley anchors nearby overnight, so you slip into the water at first light with the site to yourselves. Between swims there is a hot shower, a chef-cooked breakfast, and a jacuzzi on deck — a rain squall passing over the bow matters a great deal less from a 29-metre phinisi than from an open speedboat. July and August: The Driest Months — and the Busiest

July and August are peak season in Komodo. The weather is at its most reliable, visibility is at its best, and European and Australian holiday traffic fills Labuan Bajo. Expect 20 or more boats in the Padar anchorage at sunrise and a steady stream of day-trip groups at Pink Beach from late morning.

Riley handles peak season better than most boats for one reason: the schedule is yours. The captain runs Padar at 5:00 am before the day-boat fleet arrives, moves to Pink Beach while the crowds are still climbing Padar, and saves Taka Makassar for the early afternoon lull. A shared liveaboard cannot re-order its route for you; a private charter can.

The catch is availability. Riley carries a maximum of 10 guests in 4 cabins, which means a July or August departure is a single booking — and those dates are routinely taken 9 to 12 months out. April–June and September–November: The Shoulder Months Are the Private-Charter Sweet Spot

For most charterers, the best value in the calendar sits in the shoulder months: April to June and September to November. You get dry-season sailing conditions — calm morning seas, clear water, a dry Padar trail — without peak-season traffic. In May or October it is common to share the Padar sunrise with a handful of boats rather than a fleet, and to find the Taka Makassar sandbar empty when you wade ashore.

These months suit a private charter in particular because Riley’s nightly rate does not change with the season. USD 3,350 per night in 2026 buys the same boat, crew, chef, and fuel in quiet May as in crowded August — but in May the anchorages, the dive sites, and the dragon trails are emptier. Same price, more of the park to yourselves. Kalong Island’s sunset bat exodus, thousands of flying foxes streaming off the mangroves, is identical in any month and is a fixed stop on Riley’s route.

One planning note for the transition months: early December and late March are lotteries — you may get dry-season conditions a week either side of the official change. 2026 vs 2027: The Calendar Now Decides Your Price

There is a second seasonality to plan around, and it has nothing to do with weather. Riley Phinisi’s official private-charter rate is USD 3,350 per night for 2026 departures and USD 3,800 per night from 2027 — a difference of USD 450 per night. On a standard 3-night charter, that is USD 1,350 saved simply by sailing before the calendar turns; on a 4-night trip, USD 1,800.

Run the per-person numbers and the 2026 window looks even better. With a full complement of 10 guests, USD 3,350 per night works out to USD 335 per person per night for a private crewed yacht with a chef, four en-suite cabins, and a deck jacuzzi — full-board, inside a national park.
